Letting go of the past is something that we all know we should do. We all have had our own share of regrets and some are the type that you wished you could change or just let go. It can be easier said than done with regards to letting go of a regret. Some can be deep down and take years to heal while other regrets do slowly heal over a shorter period of time.
Do Regrets Fade With Time?
It would be lovely to say that yes, all regrets do vanish immediately. If we didn’t have emotions or value sets, then it would be no trouble at all to let a regret just slip away like it had little or no meaning to us.
Regrets that lie deep down within can take years to heal. It takes energy on your part to work at what is the main cause of the regret and then slowly but surely find the right healing for that issue on the table in front of you and work on doing the right thing next time.
Feelings of regret come in two ways. One is the regret of commission which are regrets about things you did. The other way regret is felt is through regret of omission which is when you feel regret through not having done something when you should have done so. The type of regret that hangs onto us the longest is the regret of omission – the regret you feel when you didn’t do something.
How to Grow Beyond Regret
The key is to accept the regret at the time of occurrence and to move on. By looking back at what we didn’t do or didn’t do correctly the first time hinders us when we try to move forward. Yes, healing may be needed when it comes to some forms of regret. However, that too is something we need to take in our stride and work with as close as possible and learn from the experience.
The clear message when facing regret of any kind is to 'grab life by the horns'. Each and every single one of us is on the Earth for a limited time. We all have a start date and an end date. What we do during the dash in the middle of the start date and end date is entirely up to each of us. So, holding onto regret is going to slow our life’s progress and eventually our happiness suffers too.
Be the person today that you want to see tomorrow and let life take you on it’s twists and turns whether good or bad and learn as much as you can even from moments of regret.
