Enjoying the Little Things in Life That Matter

Right now is a fundamental time to maintain a routine at home that remains simple. Simple as in simple routines of eating, sleeping, reading, watching TV, exercise, you name it – simple stuff. As for the watching TV, I say be mindful of what you are choosing to watch and notice the affect it has on you, same with eating, aim to be as nourishing for your mind and body as you can be. Basically, keeping it simple and straight ahead without creating complexity and forcing new things upon our plates that we have never tried or done before. This way of keeping it simple can be the best thing we can do for ourselves right now. On saying this there can be that tendency to skill up and take on more, if you are doing this, once again be mindful of what and why you have this need, be kind rather than demanding of yourself in the process. In a world where chaos and complexity can often reign, demands of family and work life you might not be used to how simple is. The simple steps, ideally keep it light, fun and quit the comparison game. The reason for this 'simple routine regime' is because in times of chaos and stress our minds require things to remain simple without the pressures of change and new demands in order to keep ourselves mentally sane and healthy. In order to practice this, we use a technique called ‘Goldfish Wisdom’.

What is Goldfish Wisdom?

Goldfish wisdom is the wisdom of simple things and doing simple things—at least this is a humble opinion of it. It may be the best chance we have to ensure a healthy outcome for both the mind and body as well as socially. As the world becomes more and more complex, the need for simplicity becomes greater as well. But the thing is that simplicity doesn’t happen by accident. It takes work—and no living creature works harder to keep stuff simple than the humble goldfish. They float in their little bowls and watch us with a steady, uncomplicated gaze. They don’t do emails. They don’t have staff meetings.

They don’t get hung up about the trials and tribulations of life.

They just are.

Now, we're not saying they’ve got everything worked out—because they do get flushed down the toilet quite a bit—but they really have mastered the fundamental axiom of keeping it simple. There can be a lesson in that for us all.

By maintaining a level of ‘simple’ living right now in our own bowls (or bubbles) we don’t make life complicated. A new way of living is being born at present – you have time to experiment and try new things: it doesn’t have to all be done within the first month of when you break the simplicity of the lifestyle experienced at present in your ‘bubble’. Be mindful and enjoy the little things in life as it is right now. Practice daily ‘goldfish wisdom’ in your ‘bubble’.

Next time someone says something is fishy... you may not jump to a conclusion of foul play, or suspicion, but think of that humble goldfish and see how you can add more simplicity to your day and life too.
